Message from the President
Chantal C. Volel-Torres
Hospital for Special Surgery
It's amazing that we're already here in the fall season! HLNY
kicked off autumn's programming on September 15, with
Bringing the Social Media Revolution to Health Care and 2011
ACHE Service Awards Presentation. It was an honor to recognize the hardworking
volunteers. For more information on the ACHE service awards, click here.
Also in September, HLNY was well represented at ACHE's annual Chapter Leader's
Conference in Chicago. This conference allowed ACHE chapters to share best
practices with each other. HLNY proudly presented our strategic planning process,
our FACHE advancement initiatives and our innovative orientation video. I am
thankful to each one of the board members and committee chairs for their continued
support and tireless dedication. They have made all our accomplishments possible.
This November we will be holding elections for 2012 board officers and members
at large. The self-nomination process will start in early October and you can self-
nominate yourself for a board position. Having been a member of this organization
for more than 14 years, I found that being part of committees and eventually
the leadership team enabled me to grow professionally, expanded my network
of colleagues and created some wonderful friendships. If you can commit the time,
you will see that working side by side with so many talented individuals is a
rewarding and extraordinary experience. For more information on nominations,

Message from the ACHE Regent
(Metro NY)
MaryAnn Brown, FACHE
VHA Empire-Metro
It is that time of the year again; the schools have been in full
gear for some time and the trees don all their glorious colors. It's been an exciting
time since our last communication and the line-up of chapter programs is fabulous.
I encourage you to participate in these excellent local events. Just this August,
ACHE held its NYC Cluster program again and it was extremely well attended both
by local ACHE members and by ACHE members across the globe. I hope you had
the opportunity to take advantage of the ACHE Cluster and meet your colleagues
from far and wide. It was during the ACHE Cluster that the Regent's Advisory Council
(RAC) and your chapter, Healthcare Leaders of NY (HLNY), hosted their first
Physician Executive Luncheon. ACHE president, Thomas C. Dolan, PhD, FACHE,
CAE, opened the meeting and greeted the group reaffirming ACHE's commitment
to its Physician Leaders. There is a subcommittee of the RAC that is working on
addressing some of these issues locally through HLNY and coordinating efforts
with ACHE. Stay tuned for future updates on ACHE and HLNY continuing efforts on
behalf of our Clinical Leadership.
There has also been a great deal of activity and collaboration between Regents in
New York State. I was invited by Western NY's Healthcare Executive Forum to
moderate a one hour Category I panel discussion of CEOs on Leading Organizational
Change on August 17 at The Chautauqua Institute, a truly unique and inspiring
venue. In June of this year, the three New York State Regents presented an award
at the Hospital Association of NYS's Annual Meeting. Initiated in 2010, this has now
become an annual and much anticipated event. My colleagues in Western and
Central New York are also busy preparing for Category I On-Location Programs.
One will be on October 6 at the Turning Stone Casino and the other on November 2
at The Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles. Stay tuned for more details particularly
if you missed the ACHE Cluster and are in need of multiple Category I credits for
Fellow recertification before the end of the year. Ideally, you've been able to take
advantage of all the Category I programs offered right here with HLNY to meet your
Category I requirements.
I look forward to seeing you at the next HLNY program.

How to Ask for a Raise—and Get It!
|
When was the last time you asked for a raise? If you are like most people, you
waited until you were frustrated, angry, and resentful. Not the best frame of mind
for trying to make a positive change. You probably made some critical mistakes.
You may have: |
| • |
Made your appeal based on emotion. |
| • |
Given your boss an ultimatum. |
| • |
Failed to plan ahead what to say figuring you could just "wing it". |
| |
And how did that strategy work for you? Did you get everything you hoped for?
Probably not.
There is a better way to ask for a raise that doesn't involve emotions, ultimatums,
or even slamming doors. The answer is planning. Be prepared with objective
documentation that proves beyond doubt that you deserve a raise, and have a
strategy that puts that information forward in the best possible light.
1. Research salary surveys.
If you suspect your current earnings are below average for your industry in
your state, verify your suspicion by checking out salary surveys. Your state
employment service agencies probably provide a salary survey for your
industry. Make copies of any salary surveys you find.
Additionally, if you suspect your earnings are low within your own company,
ask your human resources representative if he/she can provide the normal
salary scale for your position. Ask for a copy if possible.
These two documented sources will help support the fairness of your request
for a raise.
2. Prove your worth.
If you are waiting for your boss to notice what a great job you are doing, forget it.
No one is paying that much attention to you. It's up to you to prove how much
you are worth—literally.
Keep a weekly journal of what you've done that proves such things as:
|
| • |
Creating revenue opportunities |
| • |
Discovering costs savings |
| • |
Helping a coworker meet or beat a deadline |
| • |
Developing a better process |
| • |
Completing tasks ahead of time |
| • |
Generating good will with clients or customers |
|
|
Use your list of accomplishments to update your resume illustrating the positive
impact you've had on your company. An updated resume is your most convincing
evidence that you deserve a raise. It will also put your boss on the alert that you
are ready with an updated resume when a recruiter calls.
3. Plan your strategy.
Too often, people don't think about what they're going to say until they're
actually in their boss' office. That's too late. Practicing how you want to present
your case can be the final key to success in getting your raise.
Choose a friend or family member who has been in the position of hiring others,
and ask them to let you practice your request for a raise.
Once you have your documentation, your updated resume, and your strategy
in hand, you'll be ready to approach your boss with confidence. And you'll be
well on your way to getting the raise you have truly earned.

HLNY's Program Committee has put together a program calendar for 2011 that
offers an unprecedented 47 ACHE continuing education credit hours! This
includes 15 ACHE Category I credit hours that can be used to advance and
maintain the Fellowship credential and 32 ACHE Category II credit hours of
programs. Thank you to all who helped make this happen especially Program
Committee members Scrip Gonzales and Nicki Lapidus Fishman, who diligently
filed all the necessary paperwork with ACHE.
As a special thank you to our members who have made this chapter, in our humble
opinion, the best chapter in ACHE, the program year will culminate in an open
HLNY Holiday Party on Thursday, December 8, at the Water's Edge Restaurant in
Long Island City. This celebration, which is free to all HLNY members, will feature
the induction of the 2012 HLNY chapter officers and board members and honor
the outgoing 2010-2011 officers and board members. Please reserve your place in
advance as we expect the event to be sold out!
We hope to see you soon at one (if not all) of our upcoming events! Future
programs are listed at the top of this newsletter and are posted on our website.
